Industrial Electrification at CES

Highlights from our trip to CES 2025.

👋 Watts up? Last week, the Watts Forward team visited CES to view all of the new innovations within the industry. Over the next few days, we’ll be highlighting some of our favourite stands from the event. Firstly, we have industrial electrification, with brands like John Deere and Oshkosh showing off their efforts towards sustainable agriculture, construction, and more.

You can find the usual news towards the bottom of this email.

We hope you have a great day!

QotD: What year did the first CES take place?

Caterpillar showed off their 972 Wheel Loader, a hybrid wheel loader that runs on electric energy, but has a diesel back up to charge the batteries if or when needed, depending on the application. They also featured:

  • Electrified jobsite simulation - a 24-hour simulation showcases Caterpillar’s electric innovations, highlighting real-world data insights and energy management at sustainable jobsites.

  • Centennial hub - a display of 100 years of technological advancements, emphasizing sustainability-focused innovations.

  • Cat command technologies - remote-control technology offering autonomous machine operation for enhanced safety and efficiency.

KUBOTA

Autonomous Tractor Concept

The Kubota Group showcased their New Agri Concept, an autonomous tractor which they described as the “future of agriculture.“ The tractor does not require visual monitoring due to a handful of cutting-edge cameras and sensors, and can be recharged from 10% to 80% in just 6 minutes.

The New Agri Concept has been designed for a wide range of applications in the agricultural field, including wine vineyards. It features six independent drive motors and a three-point hitch, which allows it to plough, haul, and more.

They also featured other products including an electric excavator, autonomous sprayer, plant imager, and an autonomous mower.

KOMATSU

Innovations for Extreme Applications

Komatsu’s stand highlighted innovations to meet the needs of customers in extreme applications. This included their lunar construction excavator and underwater construction robot.

Both vehicles are also fully electric and autonomous, though they didn’t reveal any details surrounding their specification.

They also showed off the Williams Racing Formula One race car, a company that Komatsu are partnered with.

JOHN DEERE

An Emphasis on Autonomy

Last, but not least, John Deere’s stand showed off several new autonomous machines, designed to support customers in agriculture, construction, and commercial landscaping. These included:

  • 9RX tractor - designed for large-scale agriculture, this tractor features a second-generation autonomy kit with 360-degree camera coverage for improved tillage efficiency, allowing farmers to focus on other tasks.

  • 5ML orchard tractor - equipped with Lidar sensors for precise air blast spraying in dense orchards, this diesel-powered model will soon have a battery-electric version matching existing diesel models.

  • 460 P-Tier dump truck - ideal for quarry operations, this dump truck uses advanced autonomy to efficiently handle repetitive material transport tasks.

  • Autonomous electric mower - a compact commercial mower with 360-degree camera technology supports landscaping teams by reducing manual labour demands.
